Why the Sun Rises and Sets
by Emily
Long ago in the woods of Russia, there lived many animals. The Sun never went away, so it was very hot. All the animals would always complain that it was too hot to sleep, but finally, a peacock named Dafina and a pig named Anwell went to do something about it.
Dafina and Anwell decided to ask the wise fox for help.
They cried, “We animals have been suffering for many years. Please help us get rid of the hot, sweltering Sun at night so we can rest.”
The fox mischievously replied, “The only way to get the Sun to set during the night is to get a strong creature to push it down.”
They thought for awhile, then went to ask their friend Breezi for help. He was an old bird, but he willingly accepted his request. Dafina and Anwell built a sturdy rope made out of beech tree leaves, since the old bird’s wings weren't very strong. He gets to the Sun and tries to push it down. Luckily, the Sun’s surface was not hot, but the Sun’s rays made the woods humid and hot. But he had no luck.
He sighed, “Well, maybe if I get my whole family to try to push the Sun down, it will work.”
Meanwhile, the fox was watching from a nearby tree and he chuckled.
“I have tricked these little animals. They will soon give up.” The fox did not like the cool weather, so he preferred to have the Sun up all day and all night.
Breezi prepared his family to climb the rope one at a time. The Sun slowly started sinking.
“It’s working! It’s working!”
The other animals noticed the commotion Dafina and Anwell started and suddenly, the air felt cooler. But when the last family member got onto the Sun, the Sun was still exposed halfway! Many animals were disappointed.
“We must find another way. Breezi suggested that we should try to find his friend Emil the dog and his family and ask them if they are willing to take on this task.” Everyone agreed.
Dafina, Anwell, and Breezi went up north where Breezi believed Emil lived. Unfortunately, an old man had found him in the wilderness and decided to take him home.
“Don’t worry,” Emil whispered, “I will sneak out at midnight. Meet me at the big oak tree.”
They waited and waited. Finally, he arrived with his wife and one child.
“We’re ready.” he said.
So then his family began, climbing up one at a time until they reached the Sun. The Sun still didn’t go down all the way.
“Well... I have an idea!” Emil said. “My owner also owns two fat cats. I’ll call them over.”
When the cats arrived, they also tried to push down the Sun. Now only one-third of the Sun was exposed, and all the animals could feel the air gradually get cooler.
Back at the cabin where Emil’s owner lived, the fat man woke up. He sensed something wrong with the animals. When he went to check on them, they were all gone. He stiffened with panic. “Oh no! My dog and cats!”
He ran outside to search for them. He looked everywhere-on treetops and hills and in other cabins, but he never bothered to check the Sun. In fact, he never even bothered to look at the Sun because it was always there. But today, he was so desperate that he looked. He saw the silhouette of his dog and cats.
He also glanced at the rope and said to himself, “Yes! That is how I’m going to retrieve my pets!”
So he climbed up the rope and smiled when he saw them. It was late at night, so he decided to sleep on the sun. Once he sat down, the Sun lowered all the way down. Dafina and Anwell and all the other animals cheered.
The fox was very, very, mad. It was too cold for him and he started getting weak. When he was too weak to speak, he vanished. Even though the fox gave the animals some decent news, many creatures were tricked by this sly fox. Right when he vanished, the Sun came up again. The fat man had gotten off of the sun to go home and prepare for work. This has become a daily routine for him and his pets because they found it extremely comfortable up there. Every night he brings his pets to sleep with him on the Sun, then goes home every morning to go to work. From that point on, everyone did not complain about the weather at night, and rested peacefully. And that is why the Sun rises in the morning and sets at night.
